Luke Huttons repentance : ms., 1595 Oct. 29.

A poem in which the author expresses sorrow for his sins, asks God and the Queen for mercy and promises them obedience, and urges all other criminals to do the same. Eighty-four six-line stanzas, preceded by a dedication to Henry Hastings, Earl of Huntingdon, Lord President of York; an epistle to the reader; and acrostics upon the Earl of Huntingdon; Matthew Hutton, Archbishop of York; and Sir John Popham, Lord Chief Justice.

Luke Hutton is variously said to have been a son of Matthew Hutton, Archbishop of York, or of Robert Hutton, prebendary of Durham. He entered Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1582, but left without a degree and took to a violent life. He was arrested for robbery and executed at York in 1596. A broadside ballad, "Luke Hutton's lamentation which he wrote the day before his death," was published in 1598. He is also the reputed author of The black dogge of Newgate ([s. d.], reprinted 1638). ...
